The Frontline of Independent Afghan Women’s Journalism

Kaaj is an independent, women-led newsroom powered by a trusted underground network of female journalists reporting from within Afghanistan.

In a country where being a woman has effectively been criminalized, where extreme censorship prevails, and where freedom of expression has been erased, we stand as an act of journalistic defiance. From behind closed doors, we publish first-hand reporting, visual journalism, and lived accounts to document the social, political, and human realities of life under systemic gender apartheid- ensuring the stories of Afghan women are told by Afghan women themselves.

Proximity, truth, and authenticity drive everything we do. By creating a safe pathway for women journalists to sustain their reporting despite total suppression, Kaaj builds an unerasable historical record of resistance, dignity, and survival.

For us, documenting women’s lives under restriction is both a moral duty and a strategic necessity: we ensure that Afghan women remain visible, their realities are recognized, and their voices endure in global policy and history—because women matter.
